Do you understand how tooth loss can negatively impact more than just your oral health? Apart from weakening your jawbone and causing a potential shift in your teeth, it can also lead to problems developing within the body. If you are a postmenopausal woman, this can mean you are at risk of developing high blood pressure. How so? Listen to a dentist who explains what researchers have discovered regarding the link between these two conditions.
How Are High Blood Pressure and Tooth Loss Connected?
According to a study by the University of Buffalo, researchers found a link between high blood pressure and tooth loss in postmenopausal women. The study was published in the American Journal of Hypertension, and it looked at more than 36,000 women in the United States.
Completing an initial assessment of their gums in 1998, participants were monitored through 2015, on a yearly basis, for any new cases of hypertension. The results showed a clear connection between tooth loss and increased risk of high blood pressure among women who were postmenopausal.
Although there is yet to be a clear reason for the increased risk, they concluded that a change in diet may be closely associated. Researchers also believe that in order to lower the risk and prevent tooth loss, improved oral hygiene practices, blood pressure monitoring, exercise, weight loss, and improved dieting are necessary.
How Can I Prevent Tooth Loss?
If you are worried about losing your natural teeth, no matter your age, there are steps you can take to keep this from happening, such as:
- Brushing your teeth twice a day for two full minutes using a fluoride toothpaste and soft-bristled toothbrush
- Flossing at least once a day or after every meal
- Rinsing with an antimicrobial mouthwash
- Maintaining regular dental checkups and cleanings
- Avoiding sugary, acidic, or starchy foods and incorporating more fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins into your diet
Tooth loss knows no age, which is why it is important to always stay on top of your oral hygiene. By keeping your teeth and gums healthy, you can reduce the risk of losing your natural teeth. If you require restorative treatment to replace missing teeth, it’s important that you speak to a dentist as soon as possible to determine the right treatment for you.
